Half way up Clapham's Lavender Hill hides a little Hawaiian oasis, a shrine to the Gods of Tiki - Sugar Cane.

Furnished with a stylish mix of tropical kitsch (think masks, intimate grass roofed booths, low tables and lots of bamboo) this fun little joint serves up cocktails of a standard normally associated with central London's finest establishments.

Sunday through Thursday sees a stead stream of customers through the door but it's the weekends when things really kick off. Note: At time of going to press the ratio of girls to guy was about 70:30 - no doubt something that will change quickly when word gets out.

If the idea of sampling a hand crafted Hairy Coconut or Tiki Death Punch in a fun, no pretensions environment works for you then we suggest an exploratory trip to Sugar Cane.

Description:
Sugar Cane is a tiki bar with all the trimmings: huts as booths, straw chief chairs, tiki statues, exotic flowers, palms, lots of bamboo and woven banana leaves covering the walls, and even tiki face cocktail glasses.

All of this can be found on Lavender Hill and, with its pleasant patio area being the icing on the cake, this can claim to be one of the most stunning looking venues in South London. Designed by the same team behind Mayfair’s Mahiki, Sugar Cane has an equally eyecatching decor but without the pretentiousness and the expensive prices: Clapham Junction may have just found its new centre of gravity.

Since its opening in late 2007, people have quickly stood up and noticed this exciting addition to the Clapham bar scene. Hen and stag parties in hula skirts are already staples but the bar is also popular with groups aged 25-35: notably, some are from the area whilst many have made the point to travel in for a visit. Try Sugar Cane during happy hour and you are sure to become addicted to its laid back fun nature.

Sugar Cane is a great tiki bar with a laid back atmosphere: the venue will truly impress you and, best of all, you don’t need to wear designer gear or spend half your salary to enjoy a night out! (Updated 16/01/2009)

“I had a brilliant birthday in here in 2008 and only wish I had booked the same for this year. The manager is brilliant and couldn’t have been more helpful or friendly when we discussed the booking. The bar is small but not tiny and the area we reserved was big enough to accommodate my guests without being too crowded. The outside area is nice as well. The bar is designed by the same people as Mahiki but don’t expect to pay ridiculous west end prices! The cocktails are very good and very well priced. My only gripe is the toilets are downstairs but there are enough and they are very clean. I would recommend this place to anyone.”
