In April 1967 in the midst of a cultural revolution, a little restaurant in Lower Sloane Street opened its doors for the first time. The original urchin or ragamuffin ('Le Gavroche') painted by Pouc of Montmarte was presented on the opening night. La Gavroche was not cheap, but it offered food that previously could only be found in France.

Michael & Albert Roux finally realised their dream. Both had the traditional career path of French chefs. And with their savings, bank loans and backing of the Cazalet family and friends, the brothers opened Le Gavroche.

After a few years, Michael moved out if London, to run the Waterside Restaurant at Bray. Albert stayed and became one of the first celebrity chefs. Not only did he secure London's first three Michelin stars (in 1982) and attract celebrity clientele, he also trained many of today's leading chefs.

Silvano Giraldin joined the restaurant in 1971, and is now a director of the company. In 1981 Le Gavroche moved from Lower Sloane Street to Upper Brook Street.

Michel Roux Jnr took over from his father in 1981. While he has retained some of his father's classic dishes, his aim has been to lighten and modernise the menu without sacrificing flavour, enjoyment or gastronomic excellence. He loves fine ingredients presented in imaginative and unusual ways.

The first UK restaurant to be awarded one, two, and then three Michelin stars, Le Gavroche remains a class apart. (Updated 13/07/2008)
