RS Hispaniola Review

Book a table at RS Hispaniola

Best for: Amazing views of London’s South Bank and Westminster.
Great: Value for money dishes.
Photography, you either love it or hate it. Obviously hating it if you’re a member of the Hacked Off campaign or you are trying to get to work through hordes of tourists in Trafalgar Square; loving it when your Photoshopped profile gets lots of attention on online dating websites.

I walk past the Hungerford Bridge daily, frequently coming across banks of photographers - clickety-click - not paparazzi, but photography classes; their lenses focused on the palaces of Westminster or the London Eye.

On these walks I also regularly spot alfresco diners and drinkers on the decks of ships moored along the Thames; lucky people. Recently I finally became a lucky person; no longer a spectator. I was a participant, aboard the RS Hispaniola, and I thought it was high time I took up photography as well.

This floating bar and restaurant is conveniently situated next to Embankment tube station. However, the first point to note is a word of warning, especially for ladies in high heels: when the tide is low, the descent onto the ship is very steep!

Upon boarding the boat you get the authentic cruise experience, via a welcoming reception area with beautiful wooden panelling. To the left, a traditional British bar; to the right, the main restaurant.

My recommendation: book ahead. Almost every window table with views of the Thames was taken up by seated guests. Lucky for me, I had my cameraphone ready and had been fully briefed on the powers of Instagram.

We were led to the bow of the ship where the views across the Thames were spectacular, yet no so spectacular for sufferers of motion sickness. We diplomatically moved to the middle section of the dining room and, to be fair, it still had amazing views.

The décor has an adorable 70s retro charm to it, the boat being moored on the embankment as a restaurant/bar since 1974. Adorning the boat walls are classic photos of the different eras the RS Hispaniola has witnessed.

This ship was actually used by the late Princess Margaret in 1957 for a cruise down river from Glasgow. No doubt she had many joyful moments on board with her then photographer boyfriend Antony Armstrong-Jones.

There is a resident pianist belting out golden hits of yesteryear and we treated to a great medley of Beatles songs. I think the pianist would be the first to admit, he’s not the greatest singer, but he definitely has the charm to seduce the diners.

The food is very much traditional hearty British cuisine, the highlight of which was my main: a perfectly cooked loin of lamb, slightly pink in the middle, not overly lean. It was accompanied by a decent serving of spinach. It looked so great I had to take a photo. What was really special was the portion size. As much as I want to like them, Kate Moss sized portions just won’t do for me.

The other gourmet delights we enjoyed were equally solid, from mussels and charcuterie starters to my guest’s English fishcakes main course. The crème brulee and chocolate desserts also went down well.

Having been subjected to endless food Instagram abuse from my flatmate recently I decided to return the compliment; every dish, every drop of wine, sent to him in photo form, whilst he was at home making his microwave dinner. Revenge made my dessert even sweeter!

The wine list is simple but effective. The helpful staff were always on hand to give advice and we went for a bottle of Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Once again I went snap happy and took a photo so I know what to look for next time I’m in the wine shop.
To accompany such great food, wine and company, we were blessed, as previously mentioned, by those amazing views of the Thames. It’s simply unbeatable. Why queue for hours to get on the London Eye when you can enjoy stunning views of the London skyline whilst dining on great British food?

I snapped left, I snapped right and I snapped centre; for once I felt like a tourist in my home town and I was proud of it.

There are actually three levels of the boat to enjoy. It’s not simply a restaurant, but a great venue for private events too. My favourite is the top level deck where you will find me in the warm summer months, so say I optimistically.

All in all, ours was a royally charming experience. And I've learnt a new skill, so if one day I should get writer's block I can still apply to be Gordon Ramsay's or Jamie's Oliver's cookbook collection photographer. Snap, snap. more
