Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club Review

The name Ronnie Scott has been synonymous with the London Jazz scene for many years. Inspired by visits to New York’s vibrant Jazz clubs of the 50’s, Ronnie set his heart on bringing the electric atmosphere he’d experienced to London and in 1959, Ronnie and his partner Pete King opened their first club at 39 Gerrard Street. The success of their club in the early 60’s led to the need for relocation to larger premises in 1965 - Frith Street. Here Ronnie Scott’s has continued to build on its reputation of bringing the leading jazz musicians from around the world to a London audience.

Ronnie Scott’s opens its doors at 8.30pm with the live music kicking off around 9.30pm. Depending on the night, the club closes about 3am. There are three bars and a simple but more than adequate menu to choose from.

As they put it themselves, Ronnie Scott’s is:
‘a club run by people who love jazz for people who love jazz’.

“Great music, desperately uncomfortable church pew-like seating unless you pay top pricing (£40) for one of the few round tables. On the plus side, acoustically fantastic, great proximity to the artist and extremely attentive waiting staff. Just borders on being pompous and middle aged compared to somewhere funkier like the Jazz Cafe in Camden.”

“Whilst living in London, I've been to Ronnie Scott's several times over the last few years, and I must say I have always enjoyed the experience there. Food may have gone downhill a tiny bit and obviously the smoking ban has reduced the whole jazz bar atmosphere (although the musicians must benefit hugely!) so i would still recommend going.”

“Lousy food, disgusting toilets, poor sound system and all for the princely sum of £80+ per head. Try to complain and you will be threatened with being thrown out. Go see jazz elsewhere - you will be better off in more ways than one.”

“Given my location and the cost (travel, hotel etc) of visiting London, I consider myself a regular visitor to Ronnie Scott's and yes after the makeover; things are somewhat different from Ronnie's days; however I don’t believe the refurbishment is the cause of the lack of atmosphere. From my perspective the atmosphere has changed due to the change of emphasis “to make money and not music”; from my last visit 10/11/07, (and it will be the last) it appears they have now introduced two houses 6-10.30 pm and 11 pm – 3 am (Friday & Saturday) inviting you leave (bouncer at hand) at 10.30 if you booked the first house. Not only is this embarrassing and frustrating, because you are just getting into the swing of things, but it’s clear the artists (I know and have spoken with them) are somewhat embarrassed about it too. Interestingly, some of the artists I’ve spoken to, and in some cases have been on the UK jazz scene for over 30 years (no names), now insist they will not play Ronnie’s again. I have hung on to visiting Ronnie’s because there is no-where else with that fantastic atmosphere – but then “there are jazz ghosts in there”, and whilst I know things have to change, I find it an incredible insult to Ronnie Scott, and the myriad of fantastic jazz artist and jazz fans who have made Ronnie Scott’s what it is; that the current owners are cynically using the history and world wide reputation of Ronnie Scott’s to simply satisfy their need for profit.”
