LVPO (Lupo) Review

Book a table at LVPO (Lupo)

An unpronounceable venue in Soho might set warning bells off that it’s going to be a) pretentious b) tacky. It actually has a tiny weeny sliver of both, but in a thoroughly good way. Yes, really.

LVPO (just say Lupo) was born in the early 90s and is still going strong as a central meet-up for post-work drinks. The eclectic set-up consists of a small, slightly French-styled entrance and bar that leads into the main back area with various candlelit corners.

It’s a drinker’s paradise with a truly great selection of wines, champagnes and cocktails. Their ‘happiest hour’ gives all the more excuse to escape from the office early, with a wide selection of top quality stuff at a hefty discount. All cocktails are less than £4 and for those wanting to soak up the alcohol, even the platters go half price.

The food is all about snacks, nibbles and sharers. It’s not about getting stuffed on one big meal and then having to roll yourself home. LVPO wants you to stay and have fun. Ordering grub in a Soho bar is all about reducing your hangover and making sure you’ve got something to line your stomach with. And at LVPO, it actually all tastes really rather nice. Specially recommended to accompany your drink-fuelled evening are: roast mini Cumberland sausages, baked Camembert topped with sweet red onion chutney, and fishy fans should definitely go for a seafood platter.

LVPO does get packed. The central location and late licence – you can stay until 3am if your brave heart desires it – draw them in like moths to a flaming rag. For those wanting to reserve seats: simple, just ring up. You’ll even get your own personal waiter who will make you look more important than everyone else.

If you like loud, anonymous dance music, this place is a must. If you don’t, it’s bearable and, despite the crowds, you can normally get served pretty quickly – just avoid standing next to anyone ordering 17 long island iced teas and 12 cappuccinos.

News update for those who thought toilet attendants were extinct: you’ll actually be excited to learn they’re still alive and thriving in the underbelly of LVPO’s washroom facilities; a great plus for those wanting to pay someone to pass a paper towel. Come and see for yourself if you don’t believe us. It only costs a couple of quid.

LVPO = clusters of media darlings, champagne cocktails VS happy hours, cheesy music – but it all kind of works and cancels out the extremes of either end. Plus, it’s free to get in, convenient and open way past most other surrounding haunts. Just wipe your hands on your jeans after visiting the little ladies room and you can put your money into buying even more drinkies.

“Love, Love, LOVE this bar!!! They always have fantastic offers to make sure you really get more for your money, their half price happy hour is amazing (I've yet to find cheaper in Soho) and the staff are always really nice. Cheeky tip - follow them on twitter/facebook to get free bar tabs and cocktails!”

“As always LVPO provided excellent service for my group of six girls last night. There were lots of smiles from the mainly male staff (who we couldn't help but notice were all very handsome); great value for money on the happy-hour offer - even the champagne was affordable!! Plus freshly baked nibbles- what more could you ask for? Thanks LVPO, we'll be back!”

“I went to a cocktail class here for a friends birthday - really great fun! It was a real treat to get to learn how to make cocktails rather than just drinking them. They also gave us some food to snack on through the class. After my friend had reserved the big red sofas so we spent the rest of the evening there and had a great night!”

“Noisy but fun, always a good spot for Thursday night late drinks. Hard to leave the bar once you've got settled.”

“I hosted a party for approximately 30 poeple on Saturday night. Booking was via the phone with no written correspondence or similar. On arrival at 6.30pm (when the bar was otherwise completely empty) five or so bar tables were reserved at the back bar as arranged and everything was satisfactory. There was sufficient staff to deal with our party and everything was fine. However, as the evening progressed and the bar became busier other customers began to take over the tables and queues at the bar became longer and longer. I also asked for two trays of nibbles for my guests which were Ok but cost an astronomical £120 in total. We had a great night (aside from the bouncers rather rudely telling us to move round the corner of the building to smoke) and my only reservations were as follows: 1: I ensured the bar had 30 customers from 6.30pm onwards when it was otherwise empty - but I received nothing at all for this. No food discount, no drinks discount etc. I got nothing at all for my custom, we could simply have used other empty tables. 2 Other venues I investigated gave customers some complimentary food and the £120 I paid seemed steep even for central London prices. It is a great bar, very atmospheric, and well worth a visit but I would not particularly recommend it as a venue. Other places offer more for increasing their early-evening custom.”

“My friends hired the bar for a private function in the basement, I was djing at the party. When we arrived we were greeted by a brute on the door demanding a £5 entry (which he was clearly going to pocket himself as there was no sign of a cashier) when we explained that we were guests of the "privately hired party" he carried on (rudely) with the same line. It wasn't until our host got the management involved that we were begrudgingly allowed in. As you can imagine this put a serious downer on the night and speaking to friends they received equally rude treatment. Despite all this we managed to have a good evening but unfortunately just as the beginning of the evening started off badly so did the end. As i went to play the last tune of the night a manager came over and stopped the music, i started it, he stopped it. My friend had over a hundred guests who had all spent some serious cash over the evening not only that he had paid good money for the hire of the place. After all that they wouldn't allow us the courtesy of playing one more record (within the 3am closing time) a petty argument ensued and we all left with a bitter taste in our mouthes. My advice, avoid the place the plague and i hope you will never have the misfortune of meeting the rude door man.”

“Wow, what to say about this bar... well first off - it is stunning! From the minute you walk in you can't keep your eyes off the decor ( personally, after several drinks I became fascinated with the "broken mirror" pieces that make up the georgous bar top, lovely touch!). Next is onto the drinks, which are very good, and even if a mistake is made, the server is happy to re-make it and is incredibly apologetic. I agree with the review below - all the staff are very attractive, and equally as sweet and chatty! It is rare I chat up a female barmaid, but here is one of the few places I seem to always end up engrossed in conversation! Also, the change in atmosphere between a monday evening and a saturday night is amazing. Anyone could enjoy a night out here, for either a romantic evening, a night out with work or just plain partying your face off. This place welcomes you all! Last thing - Left my cell phone here one night, and I must say, after meeting the manager to get it back... I might "forget" it again!”

“Went to Lvpo for my birthday, me and all my friends had a blast. The drinks were great and super friendly staff which is rare these days, especially in the West end. Will be going back soon ...... hangover pending.”

“I went to LVPO for drinks with some work collegues recently after work. We could not believe how attractive the bar staff are. After our futile attempts to get the phone numbers of a few of the barmaids we eventually gave up, they still remained very attentative even after the numerous shots we had. We lossed track of time completely and ended up dancing to what we thought was recorded music but was in fact a very talented DJ, mixing all sorts of beats that were nothing but crowd pleasers. Be warned this venue has a happy hour everyday which I soon discovered can be dangerous as I have now become a regular. I definitely recommend this venue any night of the week as it is extremely inviting and as we discovered a place you can definitely lose all sense of time. They serve food too which is well needed after endless cocktails and shots. Will definitely be returning again. Maybe even today.”

“My first grumble of the night was the warm beer. I tried four different bottles, all of which were warm, although the bar staff didn't seem too bothered about this and the warm beer continued to be served all night. Secondly, after being seated for over an hour with a group of friends, we were TOLD by the rude security guard that we had to stand because the small table we were seated at was reserved, and although there was no sign on the table, it didn't matter. A friendly explanation and a few manners would have gone a lot further than brash rudeness. I guess the security guard missed his Customer Service class at bouncer school. And finally, after buying a shot of tequila for my friend on his birthday, the rude bar girl put the drink next to the person standing beside me, and when I turned round the shot had been stolen (probable by accident). I explained this to the bar girl as she handed back my change but she said that it wasn't her problem. I explained to her that I hadn't seen the drink, but it still wasn't her problem. Once again, she must have missed her customer services class at bar girl school. This is the first time I have left a non positive comment on a website and that’s because I felt cheated buying over priced warm beer in a place of rude employees. I hope this prompts the management team to look at their staff training a little more closely as the venue is really cosy, although I won't be going back to re-evaluate. ”

“I found the bar far too packed, the security staff were rude and looked like they were up for a fight, and the bar staff needed more training in manners/English. One of the most expensive venues in London to be treated like cattle. Never again.......”

“LVPO is a very nice place, with a DJ playing very good music, all styles, and until late at night! I had a very good time there, and it's become my favourite destination for Saturday nights! ;-)”

“Nice venue, good for private parties with areas and rooms of different sizes. The opening hours above are incorrect: the bar is open until 3am every night.”

“I have had a few great nights at Lupo. My one complaint, or perhpas handy tip, is to do with the stools. DO NOT drag them across the floor, instead pick them up and move them as the noise they make when being scraped across the floor is ear-piercingly awful! As the night progresses the music seems to improve (possibley has something to do with the number of double vodka and tonics you have!) and a dance floors appears. I'd recommend this bar for a good night out but get there early to get a table and noisy stools as it gets packed out!”
