B@1 (Be at One) Review

Best for: Amazing bar staff; a good atmosphere; The Village People.

Great: everything.

My mission to review B@1 cocktail bar in Clapham Junction, the oddly named ‘daddy’ branch, was met with nerves. I’m more of a pub girl, see, and once upon a time I had attended a different club/bar in Leicester Square in honour of a friend’s birthday and hated it. The overbearing music, the couples hump dancing, the men trying their best not to look desperate; I certainly didn’t want a repeat of that scene.

Thankfully, B@1 bar was nothing like this.

The buzz from the Olympics was still extremely high, and everyone was clambering together wherever there was a television to watch Mo Farah and Tom Daley do their bit for Team GB. Atmosphere: check.

The small and intimate venue already had people spilling out the doors at 8pm and the happy, polite bouncers waved us through. Once inside, I felt at ease in the simple but tasteful bar. The music was at a comfortable level, the low lighting features didn’t intrude, the wide windows overlooked the street, and the comfy sofas and regular barstools against the wall all provided for an attractive, not garish or dull, bar environment. Décor: check.

From my seat I could see all of the bar’s patrons and could converse happily with my chosen barmaid, Alex, who attended to my alcoholic and non-alcoholic needs for the whole night. Everyone had dressed to impress, looked happy and content, and we started to squeeze together into a comfortable position. “I could get used to this!” I told myself.

As things got swinging and the booze kept flowing, my friend and I began to see just what the girls behind the bar could really do. Looking comfortable in logo t-shirts, jeans and black trainers, they fulfilled every order with a beautiful smile and a funny joke, acrobatically hopping up onto the bar to get whiskey or vodka from the top shelf. I was scared someone might get hurt, but it seemed they were in their stride. I never knew barmaids could make a place so exciting.

My first drink of the night was the Moscow mule and, with this in hand, I continued to chat and have fun whilst occasionally watching the Olympic goings on. The hours passed in a blur of constant requests for bloody Marys and ice cream cocktails. The music got faster, the atmosphere hotter, and the men got more excited every time a brunette beauty asked them what they would like.

When I’d finished perusing the more than impressive drinks list and made my choice of a Virgin Mary, my handywoman Alex was more than happy to make it for me and make it she did. I’ve drunk plenty of these in my time but hers has to be the best I have ever had: spicy and fiery as hell, with the right amount of Tabasco sauce. I knew that I had found someone who would render all other Virgin Mary makers useless. Can you be in love with a drink? Oh well, I was and ordered them constantly, every glass exceeding expectation.

If you keep on the B@1 staff’s good side, they even allow you taste the drinks as they make them, to satisfy your needs. Boy, do these guys know how to make a good cocktail. How delicious every drink tasted, even for those who can’t drink alcohol! We’ve all had a drink that was too strong or watery or had flat fizzy drinks but these cocktails were perfect. They make cocktail creation an art form. I happily ordered drink after drink, marvelling at how good they tasted and how quickly they appeared.

By time I left, everyone was in full flow singing and dancing to “YMCA”. As I bid farewell to Alex and the friendly bouncers, I felt happy knowing that my worries about going to a bar in London had been put far behind me, and so made my way to Burger King to celebrate. more

“Stumble in this bar cuz the name and the advertise at the door that they offer an happy hour which is till 8pm. when i came inside was 7:50, time to order and was 8:06. The bartender said me that was not possible to have that happy hour for 6 minutes delay.:oO Too much busy and buzzy. Of course i will never ask for a martini in a bar like that. The bartenders look like exhibitionist teenagers and the customer as well seems people like don't have any idea of what they are gonna order to drink. I've ordered one cuba libre and one strawberry daiquiri frozen. Well... the daiquiri was just ice crushed in the blender and the cuba was just ice. I've paid 14£ just to taste the ice of this famous B@1!!! When i was complaining about the cocktail tha bartender made for me another daiquiri (the same ice tasting of before) and gave a shot of jager for free... I will say: I don't want a free shot... I just wanna have a good drink for what i pay.. All the table were full of glasses of cocktails left from the customer. Noone to clean the table. The music was very bad and very loud. The bar staff was screaming like crazy monkey at the zoo... Conclusion: I definitely will never go back to this place.”

“A cosy little venue that draws a laid-back cool crowd without the pretentions. Brilliant music. Watch out for the very generous measures or you won't be able to walk out of the place!”

“This is such a friendly, relaxed bar it feels like you could be drinking in your front room with a load of mates. The focus is on drinks (they don’t serve food), the list is good although my one criticism is that they only have 2 wines by the glass. When I went there they were playing loads of nostalgic tunes from my 6th form and Uni days, so if you’re in your late twenties and feel like reminiscing I would recommend it!”
