Beaufort House Chelsea Review

Book a table at Beaufort House Chelsea

Best for: Swanky nights out with friends; after-dinner drinks; being [or pretending to be] a Sloaney.

Great: Modern European cuisine; starters; main courses; desserts; cocktails; wine; atmosphere; service; décor (can you tell I like it?).

I felt I needed to adopt an alter ego for my recent visit to Beaufort House, Chelsea’s slick cocktail bar, brasserie and private members’ club. You see, the only Club Card I own is the one that earns points at a well-known high street food giant. I would fit in better if I became Pandora Montague-Fitzherbert for the night. Ah Pandora, the elegant Oxford graduate who runs her own art gallery in SW3. Female water polo champion for Hampshire and engaged to Freddy, one of the Conservative Party’s most promising MPs.

Oh yes, I take the construction of my double-life very seriously.

I realise I’m being unashamedly stereotypical here, but my bus journey on the way to Beaufort House only seemed to consolidate my preconceptions. The puckering of lips drowning out the buzz of the engine.

“Give my love to your mummy, MWAH!”

“YES. GIVE MY LOVE TO YOUR MUMMY TOO DARLING MWAH MWAH MWAH MWAH.”

Oh dear...

I was worried about the type of people I’d be surrounded by, but in fact I had no reason to be fearful. It is true that some of the frequenters of Beaufort House are like this – notably the bronzed and beautiful Jack Wills-clad youngsters attending the private party taking place on the third floor - but the majority are simply wealthy-looking businessmen discussing seemingly important matters, along with groups of well-dressed females enjoying a night out, and young professionals indulging in a post-work cocktail. And there are certainly an impressive collection of cocktails to get through; reasonably priced too.

Perched at the ground floor horseshoe bar underneath an opulent Art-Deco chandelier, Pandora Montague-Fitzherbert and her/my guest started the evening with a delicious Kir Imperiale - Chambord black raspberry liqueur and champagne.

There were others Pandora would loved to have tried including the Sloane Sling – Pinot Grigio with vodka, lemon & elderflower - and the King’s Road Crush – a raspberry & pineapple vodka concoction – but, as I knew we were to enjoy a three-course meal with wine from the brasserie’s lunchtime menu, Pandora decided to save myself. For one night only I was a member of Beaufort House. I was to be the very ladylike Pandora, and she definitely wouldn’t have too many cocktails and trip up the stairs, falling flat on her face into a room full of strangers. (Honestly, that has never happened to me. Or Pandora).

Normally the brasserie food is only served at lunchtime for the public, while in the evening, Japanese bar snacks are on offer. But luckily my guest and Pandora got to sample the brasserie food in the members’ club, where it is always on offer.

The second floor clubroom is the epitome of contemporary British style: dim lighting, wooden floors, comfy leather sofas, and portraits of various Dukes adorning the walls. Young men chatted over dinner, as did groups of wealthy Americans, and a pensive-looking dandy reclined on the settee with a historical novel.

The waiters have the rare skill of being attentive but not obtrusive, and are down-to-Earth chatty. Happy to recommend a Sancerre from the extensive wine list featuring labels from across the globe (prices from £19-£300), our waiter later returned to check we were happy with the choice.

The food on offer here is nothing innovative, just the usual brasserie fare, but it is done to perfection. Pandora started with scallops, which were succulent and delightfully caramelised, accompanied by smoked bacon and pea purée. A hearty portion of chilli crab linguine followed. Both the pasta and crab tasted fresh, and just the right amount of chilli and garlic had been used to achieve a fiery and flavoursome dish. It broke my heart being forced to leave so much, but the portion was enormous. My guest was equally thrilled with her smoked salmon starter and chicken with truffle broth main course. Puddings were tasty too. Chocolate and toffee-based treats were on offer, which always leads to a good night in my book. Pandora went for the chocolate mousse, with pear and Chantilly cream. I couldn’t really taste the pear, but the large quantities of aromatic Sancerre my guest and I had been slurping on all night meant Pandora was in no mood for grumbling.

Finishing this delightful gourmet journey with a coffee, my guest and Pandora mused that we really could get used to this kind of lifestyle. Casting out eyes over the membership application form, we noticed that we needed two proposers before we could join (as if that was the only obstacle in our way).

“Maybe we should go and have a chat to Mr Tim-Nice-But-Dim and his pal over there...” my guest remarked, just as a beautiful blonde arrived at their table; probably called Pandora. Oh well, back on the 345 bus to Peckham I go.

“I use Beaufort House regularly as it is my base when I'm in London. It has a great brasserie in the day (child friendly, so I can meet my friends with kids) and I work upstairs in the Private members lounge in the day as its got wifi. I have also held meetings in the boardroom (FOC as I'm a member!)and held my birthday party in the Penthouse Champagne Bar (also FOC so just had to pay for drinks). It has everything that I need, and is reasonably priced (membership was £400, but they put £200 of that on my card to spend on food or drinks - bargain!). Lucky to have found it, save a fortune, and the staff are so welcoming and friendly it makes being in London bearable!”

“Great venue, exactly what Chelsea needed! I thought the food was perfect, there is something light if you are just wanting to stop by for a light snack or some heavy meals if you are really hungry. Well priced too, which is surprising in Chelsea! Really busy when it gets sunny as all the windows open and so get there early!”
