Gordon Ramsay York & Albany Review

Book a table at Gordon Ramsay York & Albany

Gordon Ramsay York & Albany is featured in these Guides:

Best for: atmosphere, vibe and cocktails.

Great: live music and pizza on a Tuesday night.

Recipe books: full of oh-so-tempting images and ideas. Just like any self-respecting foodie, my kitchen shelves are filled with them: Delia Smith’s classics, baking books, tapas guides, and vegan cookbooks (yep, I went through one of those phases).

Despite this, the books have become more food-porn for me than instruction manuals. The reason: if I follow a recipe, the result will be, at best, a vague interpretation of the original dish.

So with this in mind, here’s a recipe that is very much open to interpretation.

A Recipe For Live Music & Pizza On A Tuesday
STEP 1: Take the tube to Camden Town station. Swerve and dodge your way through the bustling crowds milling around the station and head towards Regent’s Park. As you walk along Parkway, take time to enjoy the almost immediate contrast; a sense of space and tranquillity that reminds you more of suburbia than Central London.

STEP 2: Time and weather permitting, take a detour into Regent’s Park or the London Zoo. This is not essential to your evening but will add an extra layer of entertainment and will make you feel more like you deserve dinner and drinks.

STEP 3: Head to the York & Albany, an old pub that has been taken over and converted into a ´posh pub with excellent grub´ by that Gordon Ramsay fellow. Don’t be scared, the prices are reasonable for the quality of the food.

STEP 4: Ask the affable waiting staff for a table near the music. You’ll be tempted by the hidden outside courtyard if the weather is good, or the more formal dining room downstairs, with it’s wine-cellar-esque brick arches, but you’ll miss the ‘live-music experience’.

STEP 5: Order a cocktail. The bar staff know what they’re talking about so if you’re baffled by the extensive menu and variety of options, talk them through what you like, and they’ll point you in the right direction or make you something bespoke. Despite the £9.50 price tag, you won’t be disappointed.

STEP 6: While you wait, take in the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant; the buzzing chitter chatter of couples, groups of friends and families of all ages enjoying their evening. Don’t forget to admire the high ceilings (with beautiful Victorian cornicing, if you’re into your architecture) and full height windows, letting in plenty of natural light.

STEP 7: Order a pizza. There may not be huge amounts of choice on the bar menu, but the pizzas are stone-baked and full of scrumptious fresh ingredients. The creamy goat’s cheese pizza, with sweet caramelised onions, spinach and mushrooms, gets the balance perfectly right. On Tuesday nights pizzas are on a two for £15 offer so if you can’t pick, why not share a few between you?

STEP 8: Sit back and enjoy the live music. The York & Albany welcomes a live artist or group every Tuesday and an interesting mix of regulars and newbies pop in to enjoy it. Alice Watson’s dulcet tones are becoming a fairly regular feature but you can be sure that whoever is on, it’ll be a welcome addition to your evening.

STEP 9: If you’re feeling greedy, pick a dessert – the creamy mixed berry and tonka bean cheesecake served with a delicate hazelnut tuile is particularly delectable - and why not pair it with a dessert wine? The Monbazillac is sweet but not sickly, something to do with the ‘pourriture noble’, I’m told.

STEP 10: Avoid the toilets. Neither the décor or the cleanliness live up to the rest of the establishment.

STEP 11: If you’ve had such a good night that you’ve missed the tube, just relax! The York & Albany is also a boutique hotel, so you can always check-in. more

“I really enjoyed the Tuesday evening experience in the bar area, the music was pleasant and not overpowering and the general cadre is well adapted and is very attractive and relaxed. If I lived close by I could see myself dropping in for a cocktail and light bite with family or friends on a regular basis.”
