Hakkasan London Review

Rolling in' it!

Everyone gives top marks when asked to rate this place, it's a hit to celebrities, the wealthy and to normal-folk (like me), even Michelin gave the restaurant a star- the only one ever given to a Chinese restaurant. But by gosh, does Hakkasan deserve all these stickers, stars and points?

The restaurant is hip, chic and expensive rolled together like a perfect spring roll. Dark wooden Chinese furniture, splashes of neon colors and sexy dim-lighting gives the delicately oriental design a slight tinge of modernity. The ingenuity of combining the two makes sure that all clientele can fit in here, but the décor is only the beginning.

The first time I ever went I had cocktails and dim sum. Usually I walk out of a Chinese restaurant if I don't see a single Chinese soul- but something about this place felt like home (Hong Kong)- and I was thirsty, so I stayed- a bar is a bar no?

I ordered from their expansive menu, the Ling Ling Bar liquor collection is so vast you have to get out of your chair and walk to the other end of the bar to see it all. I tried it and I swooned, their insistence on using fresh exotic fruit, instead of puree of 'I-have-no-idea-what', in their drinks spikes you immediately. The Lai-Chi martini is a must have, the whole list is a must try, and the waiters and waitresses are a must see. Elegant, classy and Chinese designed outfits make the waiting staff better dressed than you, in my case there was no competition.

So to distract myself from such embarrassment, I ordered food to warm my badly-dressed, otherwise freezing-ass soul. I was not disappointed - the sweet, small, steaming dim-sum melted my cold, gray London-Winter infested soul. The clear steam pastry, the meticulous cut and folds - you don't have to be Chinese to recognize expert-food origami. And the taste? We'd need 'more than words'.

The second time I went, it was for a whole meal. We saw Claudia Schiffer on the table next to us, so I was already feeling full from all the star-gazing, this meant the food had better be damn good for me to be impressed. So to test the restaurant we went for the really-really Chinese dishes, i.e. the stuff that's done well even in the cheap street places: roast duck, steam fish and garlic fried vegetables. Although the price could've bought us multiples of this meal in Hong Kong, it was worth it (just this once) - because in the middle of London, although you are escaping the crowds, attitude and roughness that is home - you still miss home, and here - we tasted home.

Before you start thinking that they paid me to write this (they didn't), I have to add that the place is, on a negative note: hard to find, as it is up some random (dodgy-looking) alley; the clientele are boring (so what if there are celebrities - they don't come with the table); and people always look at you weird unless you are carrying an LV wallet (perpetually). But besides that, if you have the cash - Hakkasan has the stash! more

“I took 4 foreign friends last night to Hakkasan. It was also my first time visiting this place. Definitely the last one too. Table for 5 was booked 10 days ago. We arrive at 10.55 expecting to be sat down straight away. But unfortunately our table was not ready so we were taken to the bar. We had to wait until 11.40 to have our table ready. We could not start to eat until 11.55. Almost an hour after we expected. Bill came over £500.00 None of us had wine. All had water. A real rip-off. There are more than a dozen better Chinese Restaurants in London. Truly no recommended. Even if you are just considering to visit this place for the experience. Please note that if you are disable (using a wheel chair) this restaurant does not offer any facilities for accessing to its basement premises. Very bad.”

“This place, without a doubt, has the most stylish decor I've ever seen. The bar has to be seen to be believed-the list of spirits is never ending! The cocktails are amazing. Although there are several that come in at around £12/13 quid, they are definitely worth it. Service is excellent and all the staff are very friendly, although i have heard that the door staff can occasionally give you a bit of trouble.”

“The Lychee Martini was very impressive - and £8.50 really quite reasonable for central London. The place itself is beautiful and the staff are at every level are impeccably professional.”

“Off a beaten down track, you walk down dodgy dark streets to almost a scene from a 40's film noir, feeling almost Humphrey Bogartish only to be met face to face by the funkiest Cocktail bar in London. Yes, its a celebrity haunt, but no-one in this venue is star-spotting; as it pulls an interesting mix of personalities and wallet sizes. As a cocktail bartender myself and having visited the better lounges and bars in the capital (Lab, Detroit, Player, Dusk etc) let me start with the drinks themselves. Boasting an incredible selection of original connoctions that can make a connosiuer change the 'on the rocks' trend, the choice of spirits is to truly behold. You end up getting off your bar stool and walking down to the other end of the bar to check out he rest of the vodka selection for your Dry Martini! The preference of fresh exotic fruit, to sickly sweetened puree's that you find in most places, is a nice touch too. The second most important criteria to an excpetional bar is the service and the people skills of your hosts. The Ling Ling lounge is out of sorts in this respect. Walking through the grand staircase, we were met by the 'doubt you can afford this place' welcome from the door and reception staff. Walking up to the bar this perception changed, many thanks to the non-pretensions of the bartenders and cocktail waiteresses. After the incredibly knowledgeable mixing of an Old Fashioned by the Italian bartender/entertainer Daniel, we were subject to s”
