Adventure Bar (Clapham Junction) Review

Best for: Drowning sorrows; bad news; forgetting your troubles.

Great: cocktails; vodka shots; atmosphere, staff.

A toast to Stanley Forrest, a man whom I never had the good fortune of meeting but the pleasure of learning all about. Here’s to his granddaughter Charlotte, who I was with when she found out that his adventure in this big beautiful world was over.

Every life is an adventure. Some tread carefully, going with the flow of what life has to throw at them, others are bold and ambitious winding down the water rapids of life without a paddle or a care in the world. Some go against the grain facing splintering obstacles and tackling them one at a time with a kung fu kick, while some slide smoothly on a prickle-free plain with carefree contentment. Some go home, some stay out.

On hearing the terrible news we either left the bar to wallow in sadness at home with a cup of cocoa, or we stay out and wallow in a booze-fuelled vigour, in a bar full of sexy people, friendly staff and more types of vodka you can shake a stick at. Stay in the bar it was.

A toast to Adventure Bar, where my pursuit to learn all about Mr Forrest took place; where we were stocked and supplied with boozy treats and perfect pizza (actually, cheers to The Duck pub opposite for those – they deliver to the bar at no extra cost!) and where we laughed and cried as stories unfolded.

Stanley’s 86 year journey was full and bountiful; he lived a wonderful life and had so many great stories to tell. He passed on his yarns to his children and grandchildren for them to pass on the likes of me, reminiscing about him was the tonic to our vodka on that momentous Friday evening. Every skittles, flying saucer, bonbon, glacier ice, cookie or rhubarb and custard vodka we shot, another great story was sure to be told. There were dozens; vodka shots and stories.

From memory, I have a few favourites, anecdotes that is, not vodkas, but if you’re interested, the home-made glacier ice mint vodka was the fresh cool winner for me. The first is that Stanley used to live in Zimbabwe (or Rhodesia as it was called way back when) serving for the British South African Police Force. He even once escorted the Queen Mother. That was a story and a half, what a guy. Worth of a toast of course; cheers with a strawberry champagne julep with vodka and Prosecco, a drink HRH would be proud of.

Story telling can be laborious and tough on the vocal chords, especially if you have to shout over the likes of Vampire Weekend blasting from the speakers and various ladies and gents singing along at top volume. Fun to watch, fun to sing along with, fun to shout over but the vocal chords might not tend to agree.

Cue more cocktails, a flaming zombie with rum, triple sec, lemon, mango, pineapple, passion fruit and FIRE. It should come with a fire warning. Don’t worry, the fire burned out before it got to our vocal chords, leaving them in tact and ready for more tale-telling.

As cocktails were consumed, stories got sillier but these narratives are what shape and mould someone who you’ve never met before and elucidated what a great man Stanley was. This one was a corker and went perfectly with the sherbet tasting Uncle Vanya with vodka, blackberry liqueur and sours: 4-year-old Charlotte was walking along a beach when she noticed a dog lead, pointing at it she enquired, like every good inquisitive child does:

“What’s that?”

“That’s a non-dog,” proclaimed Stanley before picking up the lead and pretending to walk along with an invisible dog.

The joke didn’t end there. It went on and on for years, even as an adult, Stanley would fool around with the non-dog, attaching a wig to the end of the lead to represent the dog. This might not be funny to you in the cold light of day but seven drinks in, this is funny stuff.

With 86 years of Stanley’s life and 27 of Charlotte’s, there are so many more narratives to unearth, drinking at Adventure is a good place to do it.

So, here’s to Stanley. I think he would have loved the adventure we had at Adventure on Friday night. Here’s to Adventure. I think they would have loved Stanley and all the stories he had to tell. Here’s to Charlotte. I loved listening to every story throughout every vodka shot and cocktail consumed. Here’s to my hangover on Saturday. It was all totally worth it.

To Stanley. more

“An amazing venue for quality drinks! A relatively small bar can go from quiet to busy in minutes, we had a booking and the guys there really looked after us. We got there for happy hour which was two for one on all the drinks and because we had a booking we got a bottle of champagne afterwards! we had a great night would definitely recommend.”

“Have to love this place, after work on a friday it's always packed with a great atmosphere - people singing and dancing and the cocktail happy hour 2-4-1 is amazing. I love their pizzas that they get delivered and the flavoured vodkas”

“Absolutely stellar bar - the staff are unbelievably friendly and make an effort to get to know you - on my second visit they all welcomed me back as if I was a regular. I'd honestly go back purely for that reason - but I should probably mention the drinks... they are to die for! The bartenders clearly know their stuff and every cocktail is a winner, which is amazing given the HUGE selection on offer. Prices are reasonable for London - especially if you head there before 8 for Happy Hour (2 for £9, yes please!. I genuinely can't recommend this place highly enough - can't wait to go back!”

“I celebrated my birthday at Adventure Bar Clapham last weekend and we simply had a blast! Great music, people, staff, cocktails, prices, you can't fault it. To crown it all, we were given a bottle of Prosecco for free. All my guests commented on how much fun they had and I would not hesitate to go back to Adventure for another fantastic night out.”

“I came to the adventure bar on Saturday to celebrate my birthday with another of my friends. We hired an area which was all set up for us when we arrived. The staff were really friendly and one of them got me doing the macarena at 8.30pm, I was impressed by how much energy all the staff had! The barmen and ladies really made the experience and the cocktails were really great. It was also good that the staff were recommending things to try and encouraging you to drink and dance but without being pushy. Thought it pulled a nice crowd as well because of that. Thanks Adventure Bar Clapham Junction for an excellent night!”

Either way it is always fun.”

“I just wanted to say a Big thank you to all the staff at Adventure,Nigel for making the arrangements for me at short notice and to Matin who was there for us all night to cater to all our needs. it was my fortieth birthday and I wanted everyone to have a good time...mission accomplished. the most fun night out in ages. The barmen are fun, a little cheeky and super fast. Nothing was too much trouble and someone was always at hand to make sure we had what we needed. The venue was perfect, just the right size, atmosphere was great, the music got us all dancing away and the cocktails FABULOUS (two for one 5 till 8). if you can imagine it those talented bar can make!!!! The little extras like the party hats and poppers etc were nice touches, as was the free champagne which arrived with a serious sparklers attached. I had a BLAST and will definitely be back. In fact together with a friend we would like to do a fund raiser there. One cant help but have a good time stepping inside. THANK YOU. Ps they even arranged a cab for me at the end of the night xxx”

“I recently held my birthday party at Adventure Bar in Clapham and it was absolutely amazing!! To start with the staff were brilliant! So friendly and willing to help and constantly checked I was having a good night. They spoke to all my guests and were really REALLY lovely. On my reserved area there were party hats and poppers and those special touches which made everything seem a little more lovely!! Now for the cocktails... AH-MAY-ZING! The bar staff really know what they are making and the speed of service is fab. Cocktails were so yummy and even if you don't know what you want the staff can help you pick something according to your own tastes. They are average prices, ppretty standard for London, but worth it! The music was ace... all of the classics (not really chart). A little cheesey but anything that can get you up and dancing and singing your heart out. All my guests gave really good feedback to me and I would definitely go again.”

“My favourite bar in London! Went there recently for my birthday and it was great. The staff made a real fuss of me and my guests and we all had a fantastic time - the fact that they have happy hour until 8pm certainly helped!! (And a huge bonus seen as a happy hour that late is unheard of in other bars on a Saturday!!) Great staff, excellent music and fantastic cocktails. I can't recommend it enough!”

“Probably one of the best bars in London, if you like good music, drinks and people.. I like this bar as it's not just another boring style bar full of mannequins. We always have a good time here, because of the good atmosphere. The place does what is says on the can, it has all the elements for a great night, without poncing it up. I think they have all you need: simply a Bar with good bartenders and DJs playing good music, great!”

I've been to all 3 of Adventure's bars and they do everything right, from excellent cocktails to a friendly party atmosphere. Go once and you'll be hooked!”

“Undoubtedly the best cocktail venue in Clapham Junction. As a former Junction resident, this was my local and I could not speak highly enough of the place. The two guys that own this fantastic little bar, which is a small chain, just know how to do things right. Happy Hour is every day from 5-8 and the cocktails are just fantastic. It also boast a late licence, which is a rarity for a bar in Clapham Junction. Great music, friendly crowd and fabulous cocktails - what more could you ask for?”
