Valentines Day Bar, Restaurant & Hotel Guide
Searching for inspiration for Valentine's Day? We may just have what you're looking for - fantastic ideas to entertain your loved one and the Top Ten Valentine's Special Offers from London's finest venues. But before the romancing, how about impressing your date with some historical background to this most amorous of days?
Valentine's Day dates back to the days of the Roman Empire, when Emperor Claudius the Cruel was having a hard time finding men to fight his battles. Figuring married men wouldn't leave their wives and families but single men had nothing to lose, he made all engagements and forthcoming marriages illegal. Enter St Valentine, priest and general romantic soul, who flouted the law to wed couples in secret. Caught in the act, he was beheaded on 14 February AD 270, not before leaving a note to his jailer's daughter, signed from your Valentine.'
These days, you can get hitched or fall in love without losing your head or being summonsed abroad to fight Barbarians. And if you want our advice, this February you'll be swept off your feet or sweeping someone off theirs in London.
Ideas for something a little special
Forget Paris - that was last century. For a top romantic destination, look no further than England's capital. And Fluid Style London has some exciting suggestions:
- Ride the (pink for Valentine's) London Eye in your own personal pod, complete with champagne and waiter.
- Take winter walks through Richmond Park or over Hampstead Heath.
- Row or be rowed across the Serpentine, (rose in mouth).
- Wander winding old alleys around St Pauls hand-in-hand.
- Gaze on Waterloo Sunset and hear a nightingale sing in Berkeley Square.
And later, where better to celebrate your love than in one of the many romantic bars and restaurants the capital has to offer.
